Dr. Raju Bheemanahalli Rangappa
Overview
Research/Extension Interests
Stressors during the crop-growing season become more intense and frequent, with factors such as drought, high temperatures, waterlogging, and greenhouse gas emissions on the rise, affecting agricultural production. This is compounded by challenges such as shrinking agricultural land, rising input costs, and a shortage of skilled labor. These factors contribute to a decline in agricultural production and quality when we grow sensitive crops in marginal soil types with poor nutrient content and harsh environments with drought and heat. These challenges can be mitigated by systematically assessing individual and combined stress responses during critical growth stages. In this context, my Plant Stress Physiology Laboratory (PSPLab) is dedicated to finding solutions to optimize agricultural productivity by understanding unique and shared plant responses to stressors. The knowledge and resources generated from our research help develop breeding materials and stress mitigation strategies. Overall, the PSP Lab focused on improving cereal and legume resilience to abiotic stresses at different development stages by identifying traits, mechanisms, and genomic loci.
Research interests: Plant responses to abiotic stress, Adaptive traits and climate resilience, Reproductive physiology, Remote sensing applications in phenotyping, Phenome to the genome, Genome-wide association mapping, and management practices to improve soil and plant health.
Dr. Bheemanahalli’s interdisciplinary research focused on understanding and quantifying the responses of crops (corn, cotton, rice, sorghum, soybean, wheat, and horticulture crops) to stressors (drought, heat, cold, salinity, nutrient, and combinations) and management changes. His research i) quantifies the impact of stressors on crops at different development stages, (ii) employs classical and remote sensing tools to explore genetic variation in stress adaptive traits, (iii) maps genetic loci that are associated with stress resilience, and (iv) develops simple and scalable phenotyping tools that can be used to scan diverse genetic resources for stress tolerance.
